Formula SAE : Advancing Electric Powertrain Innovation
In 2020, Hanyang University’s FSAE team RACE made a landmark decision to compete in the Formula SAE International Competition, establishing itself as the only Asian team to participate. To meet the rigorous technical and organizational demands of the competition, we formed a dedicated 15-member task force, bringing together expertise across various domains.
Our team integrated cutting-edge technologies, including a prepreg CFRP monocoque chassis, an in-wheel all-wheel-drive system, and a planetary gearbox, pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle performance. As part of the powertrain division, I played a crucial role as a gearbox designer, where I was responsible for the integration of the BMS (Battery Management System) and motor inverter system. This task required a deep understanding of energy management, power electronics, and drivetrain optimization, ensuring seamless coordination between key powertrain components.
Despite the logistical challenges posed by COVID-19, which prevented on-site participation due to a sharp increase in transportation costs, our team remained committed to excellence. As the sole Asian representative, we successfully competed in the Knowledge Event, achieving outstanding results and gaining valuable insights into electric vehicle development and competition strategy.
This experience reinforced my expertise in electric powertrain design, system integration, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, further shaping my passion for energy-efficient mobility solutions.

Powertrain Innovation in Formula SAE Korea
Amid the challenges posed by COVID-19, our team adapted to unforeseen circumstances by competing in the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE) competition. Despite this shift, we remained committed to innovation and performance, setting ourselves apart with a boosted 600V powertrain system—a strategic decision that significantly enhanced both power output and drivetrain reliability.
As a gearbox designer in the powertrain division, I played a key role in ensuring the seamless integration of the high-voltage system with a robust and efficient drivetrain architecture. Our unique approach to powertrain and gear drivetrain design enabled us to achieve remarkable performance, outperforming conventional setups and demonstrating the advantages of high-voltage operation in an electric formula race car.
Our efforts were recognized with top-tier awards, including:
1st Place – Altair Optimum Design Award
Silver – Technical Idea Award
This project not only deepened my expertise in powertrain optimization and high-voltage system integration but also reinforced my ability to develop competitive and reliable electric vehicle systems under real-world constraints.
